Experience the starlings’ dance in the Tøndermarsch marshlands
Just before the starlings descend to the ground for the night, they form large flocks that create fascinating patterns in the sky, almost blocking out the sun—hence the name Black Sun.
Based at Hotel Røde-Kro in the Aabenraa area, you have the perfect starting point for a trip to the Tøndermarsch marshlands in western Southern Jutland—the ideal place to experience spectacular natural phenomena such as Black Sun. In spring and autumn, millions of starlings migrate north and south respectively, stopping in the Tøndermarsch marshlands to feed before continuing their journey. The starlings come to the marshes to eat crane fly and goose beetle larvae, which are found in greatest numbers in wet grasslands. During the day, they mainly forage in the outer polders of the Tøndermarsch marshlands, while at night they seek out reed beds to roost.
Book a guided Black Sun tour in Southern Jutland
The roosting areas keep changing, both to evade birds of prey and because after a few days the reeds break, leaving the starlings standing in water and prompting them to move elsewhere. You can therefore never be completely sure where the starlings will settle for the night. For this reason, we always encourage you to book a guided tour with experienced nature guides.

Nature guides spend their days observing the starlings, giving them a good idea of where the birds will roost in the evening. While there is no guarantee that you will experience Black Sun on a guided tour, the chances are greater than if you venture out on your own. A guided tour also offers a great opportunity to learn more about the Wadden Sea and some of the many other birds found in the area.
